About the work

I was never quite sure how to respond to the question of what kind of artist I was since over the years the content of my work as well as the media and materials I use have changed so much. Recently I heard a conceptual artists describe himself as not so concerned with the end product as with the materials and the process of making the art -- working without a preconceived notion of the end product. I realized this was exactly the way I work.

Discovering what happens when I take a set of materials I may never have used before and seeing what emerges is what interests me as an artist. Other times I may use familiar materials, but impose restrictions on how I use them. The results may be figurative work, or sculpture -- either large or small-scale, or abstractions, etc.

I'll work on a series until I've exhausted the possibilities as far as I can see, then stop. What follows is usually a period of exploration, or tinkering until I'm inspired by a new concept--be it materials or process--waiting to be turned into objects.
